My Project
This project will provide access to deeper understanding of geographic concepts to students who greatly benefit from opportunities to explore through real, hands-on learning experiences. The Title 1 students at MES do not have equal access to these opportunities and many concepts that are explained in books, through virtual field trips, or on paper are often not relevant, applicable or effective. This project would greatly enhance their understanding of the world around them, as well as the geography of the world we live in.
The goal of this project is to provide a hands-on exploratory activity to students who have limited access to real-world examples of geographic concepts.
This would not only support our Standards of Learning in science, math and history, it would also greatly impact student's understanding of obscure concepts. Kindergarten, first and second grade students would have a sensory experience to explore animal habitats and world-wide ecosystems. Third, fourth and fifth grade students would have the opportunity to explore how topography has influenced history and society, as well as math concepts like positive and negative integers (below and above sea level), and how geography and plate tectonics have shaped our world.
Our students are from many backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in Science, Math and Technology fields. Our students would feel empowered to choose future education opportunities and careers in these paths; giving them a better understanding of the world we live in benefits all of us!
