At my rural K-5 school, students earn "Free Play Music Days" in music class by actively participating and displaying neighborly behavior. All students in these grades can earn a "Free Day."
For their "Free Day," I set up several centers around the music room, and small teams travel from center to center every few minutes exploring world instruments on our music computer, playing musical games, trying out the piano, Boomwhackers and Orff instruments, or listening to "cool" music on the CD player. They're having so much fun, they don't realize they're learning!
Two of our centers use headphones (given by a DonorsChoose Patron). Our music computer has only one audio jack, which makes it tedious for teams of three to five students to share the headphones. It's also rough on the poor headphones! At our listening center, the students like to dance, but the cords are not very long, so they can't get far.
A 1/4" jackbox and some 1/4" audio extension cords would really make a difference in our students' enjoyment of these musical experiences.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
