Have you ever been so interested in a book, so swept away that you didnât want the book to end? Or you connected with characters and felt you knew them personally? My ultimate goal is to instill this passion and love for reading with the use of audio books!
I teach 23 fourth graders in a rural community in Western North Carolina.
Our K-5 elementary school has over 900 students with a high percentage receiving free and reduced lunch. Within our classroom,we have a passion for learning and helping others to learn. We often will encourage and cheer each other on to promote a friendly and open environment. We set high expectations for ourselves and support each other to go above and beyond and to strive for the very best. One of our classroom goals we have set is to become better readers. I feel that at this age, students are beginning to form their own opinions about reading, and I want them to have a good experience. Many adults say âI donât like to read. I never liked to read when I was in elementary school, and I donât like it now.â We must help students to find their niche with books that spark their interest. Through the use of audio books, students might just find their niche and discover a love for reading!
My Project
How can I instill a passion for reading in students and create a literacy rich classroom? The sounds of students excitedly discussing books, recommending books to others, and talking about authors and book series would be those conversations coming from a literacy rich classroom. How I would love for this to be the common dialogue in our classroom. Although a few of my students do indeed love to read and enjoy talking about the books they have read, many say they would never read if they didnât have to. Why is this? The main reason many students do not like to read is because they struggle with reading. Not only do they feel frustration but they feel embarrassed and lack self-confidence. I want to turn this around to create a positive reading experience for my students with the use of audio books. This equipment will help with reading fluency, comprehension, intonation and expression, reading accuracy, as well as introduce students to the exciting world of reading!
