Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My upcoming class will consist of beginning and advanced ESL students who must meet the Common Core Standards. They need to read on-level text or at least attempt to do so, but with their limited English language skills it is very difficult. They need these audio books so that they can follow.
My students are rising 5th graders currently living in Brooklyn, NY.
They come from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Panama, Mexico, and Jamaica. Their reading levels range from A-P. They enjoy reading but have limited access to adequate materials, especially audio books at the 5th grade level.
My students are very energetic and love reading!
My Project
The resources that I am requesting are audio books. ESL students need audio books in order to help their process of learning English. They get to read books that the other 5th graders are reading and they get to hear the words as they read along.
With the audio books, my students will be able to read with other students in small groups or independently. They will be able to repeat the words without feeling embarrassed. They will learn to become independent of other students and the teacher. For some, it will allow they to feel more engaged in reading activities.
This project is so important because my students will be able to have new books and will hear the story come alive!
These will be the first set of new books that my students have received since arriving in the U.S. and/or attending our school. Research also shows that audio books have a strong impact on reading levels and learning English.
