Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a small transfer school, founded to serve overage, under-credited 8th graders who have been held back two or more years; this means they are entering high school at 16. Many of these students are disengaged, have had various obstacles and challenges in their lives, including but not limited to homelessness, food insecurity, having children, etc.
My school provides full wrap-around services for the students and their families to ensure the social-emotional and academic needs are met, however, there is more that can be done inside the classroom to re-engage students who struggle.
Over the past three years, our school has seen an influx of international students, so that our school now has a 60% English Language Learner population, and a number of these students have had interrupted education. This means that not only do the students have to succeed academically but learn a new language in order to be college and career ready, as well as pass the English regents, which is only in English.
Our belief is that every child is capable and in this capacity, every student at our school will take at least one Advanced Placement course during their time at our school.
My Project
Whether remote or blended, students have difficulty filtering out the noises around them when logged in to class online. Headphones with mics will enhance student learning by enabling them to both hear the teacher and their classmates, and fully participate in conversations by using the mic. Immersing themselves in their learning deepens understanding of content and supports students in internalizing the content, skills, and strategies that contribute to them becoming independent readers, writer, thinkers, and active participants in their both their academic life, and community. Many of our students are constantly surrounded by noise that interrupts their learning- headphones with mics will eliminate those distractions.
