Attention: Scientists!

My students need science text about force, matter, and life cycles, as well as magnets and manipulatives, to develop their literacy skills and gain science knowledge.

My Students

Albert Einstein said, "I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they learn." By funding this grant, you will allow me to create the conditions for my students to become scientists!

I am a second grade teacher at an urban school in Indiana.

My school community is comprised of financially struggling families of all races, languages, and religions, and extremely hard-working teachers and staff. As a community we are trying to give all the students attending our school an opportunity for a better future.

My Project

Through a professional development opportunity, the idea of "content literacy" was brought back to my school. I was fortunate enough to co-teach and plan on using the content literacy model. This model provides structures for students to think and work at high levels while integrating reading and writing. I saw amazing thinking and science coming from 7 & 8 year old children! It is my hope to continue using these structures. However, to best implement these practices, we need a large quantity and variety of texts and materials about our science concepts. We need texts about matter, force and motion, and life cycles. We also need scientist supplies such as magnets and life cycle models. Having these science texts and materials will allow my students to participate in small group stations where they complete tasks that require high levels of thinking.

These materials will take science from being a subject area we squeeze in at the end of the day, to a vital part of our thinking and learning.

With the help of these texts and materials, I will start the transformation of students into future scientists and hopefully spark a need for science that will continue to grow.
