Imagine the day you had to go shopping in the supermarket, you walk in the supermarket but you don't remember what you need to buy because you didn't write a grocery list. Writing can happen anytime and anywhere. That's what I want my children to know and understand for the rest of their lives.
I am a kindergarten teacher working in a Title I school in Brooklyn and more than 98% of the students have free lunch.
The majority of my students have little or no writing tools at home whether it be markers, crayons or even paper. Some have never held a pencil before beginning kindergarten.
My Project
My goal is for my students to draw and write on a daily basis, anytime or anywhere. I want them to explore the idea of illustrating their pictures with colorful markers and write as much as they desire on a piece of paper or notebook. For example, they can write grocery lists for a trip to the supermarket, list of what they want for Christmas or the holiday, letters to the President or their family or friends, or just about anything. By using markers, my students will also be able to work on their fine motor skills while bringing their pictures to life.
A donation to my project will allow my students to practice the essential skills in a colorful and imaginative way, the possibilities could be endless.
By allowing my students to express themselves through creating colorful images and encourage language through writing words, my students can be anything they want to be! An artist! A doctor! A scientist! A teacher!
