This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in New York. Our school is located in an area with a very high concentration of poverty. Most, if not all, of my students are eligible for free lunch. They are a hard working group of first graders who are persistent and determined to do well in school. They are a group of hard workers who need essential resources to help them do their best work at home and at school.
My Project
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away."
My students are learning about the importance of daily attendance. They know and understand that when you miss a day from school, you will miss a lot.
Attendance matters! My students need facial tissues, hand soap, bandages, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and hand-sanitizer to kill the germs that cause the sneezing, sniffing, and coughing that they say usually comes with the arrival of cooler weather.
Ah choo! That is a sound that can be heard in my classroom nearly every day. The cold and flu season can be particularly hard on my students. When my students miss a day from school, they miss a lot--attendance matters. Being marked present is an essential first-step to providing them with a quality education.
Once explained, my students will understand the importance of being in school every day. No doubt, they will agree and promise to be in school if they "don't catch the cooties." These essential resources will be used to clean off commonly used items, such as the desks, door knobs, smart board pens and computer keys after someone sneezes or coughs on them. They can use the hand wipes after bathroom breaks to make sure their hands are clean. The pretzels, pop corn, and other snacks will provide them with a heart-healthy snacking option whenever they need an energy boost.
