Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We may be biased, but we believe we have the best kids around! Our school serves about 450 Kindergarten through 5th grade students. One of our focus areas this year is attendance. Since COVID, our average daily attendance has hovered around 90%.
While 90% sounds great (we'd all like to get 90% on an AP Calculus test!), a 10% daily absentee rate indicates that too many students are not here every day learning critical reading, writing, math, science, and more!
In fact, research has shown that an attendance rate below 95% often indicates a school community that has challenges with chronic absenteeism (missing more than 10% of the school year).
Our goal this year is for 95% of our students to be here every day, ready to learn AND to cut the number of chronically absent students in half. We've tried attacking our goal in several ways. The first is we've created an attendance team with a contact for every grade level. The team meets weekly to discuss students, supports that are in place for families, and how we can encourage all of our students to be here every day to learn.
One of our strategies this year (and we have lots!) is to provide an attendance card to each class every day they have perfect attendance. When a class has earned 5 attendance cards, they are rewarded with a small treat (cookies, chips) with their lunch as a celebration. We are hoping to build a small collection of these treats so we are ready to celebrate as soon as a class hits their goal!
