I need to update my skills, get new ways of helping students express themselves with art projects that are relevant and fun for the students I teach by going to this art conference.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Title I school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students, and they get to the school early to eat the breakfast that they don’t get at home. My students eat their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day.

We are a uniform school and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small, and don't really look clean.

The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn, but some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.

My students are 11 and 12-year-old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging, and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.

My classes are all year so I can work with these students in-depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.

My Project

I would like to be able to attend this art conference in Southern California, (I live in Northern California) this year to tune up my art teaching skills to be the best art teacher for the student population I teach.

85% of the students I teach live in poverty, some are homeless, live in group homes, with relatives and school is their one safe place where they are encouraged to create and express themselves.

I would like to learn new art skills that will make the art I teach more relevant to their lives, There is a workshop on using social media with the arts and I could use that to reach students. There are many workshops emphasizing using art as an expressive outlet.

The conferences have workshops on the latest art education theories such as a workshop that uses art as play for social development, emotional well-being and creating balance. Another workshop is on “pocket journals” as a personal visual record for student’s emotions and reflections. I would love to learn how exactly to start a pocket journal as that would work well with students that don’t have a home and few possessions.

There is a workshop on Op art spinners with an emphasis on social development, emotional well-being, physical health and creating balance in one’s life. I think this conference will give me as an art teacher, some exciting projects that I can use with the student population I teach. I am excited about the pocket journal and teaching that when I come back from the conference. Students will benefit from having something of their own that they can keep and draw whenever, wherever they want.
