Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Social studies has always been my passion. Throughout my whole life, I have loved learning about distant and faraway lands. I have seen that students also love being taken to faraway places without leaving their seats.
My students are mainly 9th and 10th grade English language learners from Latin America and the Middle East.
Despite coming from all over the globe, they have arrived with very little knowledge of the lands that previously surrounded them. I am hoping to open them up to the world around them, and in the process, make the world seem smaller and friendlier to them. My school is in a working-class community in Northern New Jersey.
My Project
My classroom incorporates science and art within the geography unit. We have been studying plate tectonics, continental drift, minerals, and natural resources.
in order to create our 3-D maps, the students need an interactive resource which they can use to model their project.
The Rand McNally World Geography Atlas is an essential tool for students to see the different models of maps.
The students will choose a model to recreate and practice being cartographers. The students will be allowed to pick a country and create a map which includes the natural resources and landforms. We will be partnering with the art department to utilize their resources to make these 3-D creations.
