Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Social studies has always been my passion. Throughout my whole life, I have loved learning about distant and faraway lands. I have seen that students also love being taken to faraway places without leaving their seats.
My students are mainly 9th and 10th grade English language learners from Latin America and the Middle East.
Despite coming from all over the globe, they have arrive with very little knowledge of the lands that previously surrounded them. I am hoping to open them up to the world around them, and in the process, make the world seem smaller and friendlier to them. My school is in a working class community in Northern New Jersey.
My Project
My students enjoy learning about places in the world. In class, we have covered all corners of the globe in my World History class thus far this year. However, some students like to learn at their own pace. I am hoping that a class set of atlases for my students, that they are able to consult individually at any time throughout the lesson will help them see the world more clearly. With a child's own atlas, the student can see where Prussia was located and look at the geography of Prussia on their own. A child can use the atlas and see why Russia has been proactive throughout history in trying to acquire land. My whole life, I have always been fascinated by maps. A piece of paper explains so much as to the why's of history. Handing a child an atlas will help me explain the why's and help them see the why's on a map.
