My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty urban school district, my scholars face daily challenges just getting to school. High crime rates, unemployment, and substance abuse issues are real problems facing many of my scholars as they enter the school building each morning. My scholars are often hungry and sleep-deprived because of the uncertainty and upheaval which is an ongoing cycle in their young lives.
COVID-19 has made learning even more difficult for my scholars who already face difficulties learning in a traditional classroom.
My students are already facing many learning challenges. Along comes COVID-19, and now they must learn at home. They have little or no access to technology or internet in their homes. The only learning that is able to take place is when the district supplies them with learning packets. We are unable to supply computers or internet to all students in the district.
It is unfortunate that my scholars are experiencing inequitable education at this time of COVID-19. Before COVID-19, many of my scholars would come into my classroom saying they had difficulty completing assignments or practicing new skills because of lack of supplies and resources. Now they really have a difficult time completing learning task.
My Project
The materials I have selected are hands-on science and math activities that students can do on their own at home to keep their previously taught skills and also explore some hands on activities that will allow them to ignite their creativity.
Can Do Science Activities, exploring the life cycle, digging for dinosaurs, and creating number bonds will allow my scholars to keep practicing new skills at home and engage them in exploration as they discover new concepts on their own.
COVID-19 will not stop my scholars from being science and math explorers at home. They will continue to overcome despite many obstacles that often prevent them form obtaining a great education.
