My Students
I am an occupational therapist that works with students of all ages with the majority of my caseload being middle school students. My middle school students range from students who need very little support and spend the majority of the day in general education classrooms to students in self contained classrooms that require a high level of support. However, the majority of these students have one thing in common: they struggle with sensory processing and self-regulation and require movement to remain engaged in class. And this year, during this time of online learning, all of these students are learning from their home environment which is giving them even less opportunities for physical movement and sensory input.
The items in this project will provide sensory accommodations, to be checked out to student's homes, for my special education students who need additional resources in order to learn and succeed in school especially while learning from home.
These resources will enhance their ability to engage in classroom learning opportunities by calming and organizing their body.
My Project
The materials requested in this project are the tools that students have asked if the school can supply to help them remain focused in their newly designed home learning spaces. Many students are now trying to learn from their own home with their siblings sitting next to them, or their baby brother or sister crying, while construction is being done outside their window, or on their bed because that's the only available space.
These students need alternative desk options, and headphones to drown out all the distractions, and fidget tools to keep them focused.
The students crave learning but are constantly distracted by the world around them as they are no longer learning within a building filled with other scholars and free from worldly distractions but rather in their own homes.
