Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students with special needs are amazing people. Although they require direct assistance from teachers and paraprofessionals at the school to complete their academic and enrichment assignments, they have great enthusiasm, and interest in any activity presented to them. Working with their teachers on hands-on projects helps them increase their communication skills and builds self-esteem. They thrive when given hands on projects which allow them to be creative and show their talents.
My students are extremely challenged by the sudden change to the daily routine and switch to on-line learning.
They miss their friends and teachers, and don't all have the ability to pick up a cell phone and call someone. They live in a city which is particularly affected by the corona-virus pandemic. Many of the parents of my students continue to work every day as essential workers, while making sure their children are cared for and learning at home.
My Project
My students love to draw, paint, and express their stories and ideas through their art. When at school, they usually have many opportunities to express themselves through their art. Yet during the months that they are home due to the corona-virus pandemic, my students lack basic art materials to express their learning and thoughts.
My students need to express their ideas and show their talents, so I chose to purchase basic art materials which I will assemble into 40 kits to mail to them.
Each student will receive a sketch pad, colored pencils, watercolor set, and markers. They will be ecstatic both to receive a package in the mail, and to receive these art materials to keep for their own use.
These very special students will use their art in creative ways to stay engaged in their learning while home.
