This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Working at a high school and supporting students with disabilities offers many challenges. My students are often several grade levels behind and require multiple reads of the text to help with their reading comprehension. Additionally, a large number of students whom we work with in the general education classroom are also reading behind grade level.
This project aims to support students in adopting assistive tech in the classroom by providing headphones with built-in microphones to help them utilize voice-to-text and text-to-speech in their general education ELA class.
At this point in the school year, my students have been resistant to utilizing these supports due to how the utilization of the large classroom set of headphones outs their disability. Additionally, the lack of a microphone on the classroom set headphones also picks up the sound in the school and makes voice-to-text unreliable. My vision for this project is that obtaining more low-profile headphones with a built-in microphone will enable more students to utilize assistive technology in the classroom, benefiting both students with disabilities and general education students.
