As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 90% of our students receiving free lunch. My students are between 6th and 8th grade. My students all have multiple disabilities, with 100% of them being non-verbal, and struggle to communicate with the world around them.
This project will help the students in my classroom grow and communicate in a more effective manner.
My Project
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Camera will allow the teacher and assistants in the classroom to take pictures of the students during whole group instruction. It will also allow the teacher and assistants to attach the picture to our push button devices to help the students make choices and work on their goals. The pictures combined with the push button devices we have in our room, also allow our students to better communicate with us in a non-verbal manner.
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Camera will allow the teacher and/or assistants in the room to take a instant photograph to be used on the students "BigMac" communication devices, as well as with other projects.
This will the students to communicate more effectively within the classroom. The Kindle fires will allow our students to interact with assistive technology, as well as communicate with the world. Further more, there are apps that are specifically designed for students with Multiple Disabilities. By allowing each student to have their own Kindle Fire, we can set them up specifically for each student so they are unique to the student. This technology will also help them to communicate their wants and needs, and assist them in the learning process.
