This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever felt frustrated because you don't understand what someone is saying? This is the feeling my students experience everyday as they try to become proficient in a new language and access grade level content at the same time.

I teach first grade at a school located in a low social-economic area in Los Angeles.

The subject matter of my class is multiple-subject. In my class I have 22 students between the ages of 6 and 7.There are 15 boys and 7 girls. My class is composed of 100% Latino students with parents from Mexico and Central America. All 22 students are Spanish Speaking students with Spanish speaking parents. I have 19 English Language Learners whose primary language is Spanish and are learning English as their second language.

My Project

My English Language Learners lack vocabulary in English, making it extremely hard for them to access academic content and make meaning of it. English language learner students need to experience language in a different ways. They need to hear language, write language, speak language, and read language, and one way to provide these is with the use of an LCD projector and a document camera. With the aid of an LCD projector and a document camera, my students will get more support of text I am reading with suitable images from the Internet that will provide contextual clues and help my English Language Learners determine meaning of the content. The use of an LCD projector and a document camera will bring material to life, making it easier for my students to access vocabulary and content. They will be able to explore and represent information in a more engaging way therefore increasing their confidence, communication skills, and comprehension.

An LCD projector and a document camera will facilitate learning in a variety of ways, including assisting in teaching English Language Learners in core academic subjects, such as reading and writing and vocabulary and verbal language development.

The LCD and document camera will serve my classroom as a visual tool to enhance the flexibility of presentations and text, giving my students, regardless of background or language, the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and language skills necessary to succeed.
