Help me to turn learned helplessness to learned greatness! I teach a multi-grade self contained special education class in a wonderful elementary school. I have a colorful rainbow of personalities in my room. One common trait shared among most of these students is "learned helplessness." Learned helplessness is a phenomenon in which individuals over time, from what I see as a result of repeated failure, become less willing to attempt tasks. They have started to give up on themselves and I can't let them loose hope that they can achieve great things!!
Students with learning disabilities experience significant difficulties with the writing process. A large portion of our school day is dedicated to various writing assignments. Most typically developing students are able to manage the daily writing tasks, but students with LD on the other hand have difficulties in fulfilling the demands resulting in anxiety, stress, and reduced academic achievement.
We are surrounded by opportunities to use technology daily and my students love using computers. Assistive technology devices promote greater independence for people with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish or had great difficulty accomplishing. Writing is very difficult for my students, but having them compose writing on computers using portable word processors,voice-recognition software (turns the spoken word into the typed word)and alternative keyboards can make writing a more attainable goal.
I strongly feel that continued failure will inhibit my students growth. You can help me make it possible for these students with special needs be successful and participate in the daily writing activities with greater chances for success. Help me to turn learned helplessness to learned greatness one victory at a time!
