My Students

My current class is a mixture of Gifted and EIP, or Early Intervention Program.

Although students start school at the same time as their peers, somewhere along the way their educational experiences and intellect begins to differ.

My current class is in need of increasing their Lexile levels. I provide instruction and experiences so that they may obtain the necessary academic and life skills to reach their actual grade level in a reasonable amount of time. Our hope is to have them exit this class and return equipped with knowledge to be successful in their current grade level.

The majority of my students are eager learners, who may have had some setbacks in school and in life. The other half are learning to love school and its importance in their future. We are constantly trying to think of ways to engage them in the learning process and teach them how to be responsible for their own learning.

We are located in a neighborhood that is a part of a large metro city. Safety is usually a concern, but we work hard to provide a safe space for the students while here.

My Project

In today's fast pace and ever changing world, students have to be prepared for the task of solving problems. The items on my list may seem so random to the naked eye, but they certainly make for a great STEM Problem Based Learning experience. This year, my fifth graders are working with Electricity, Chemical and Physical Change and Classification & Inheritance! All of these are so exciting, but will be even more exciting if they have the tools to be innovative with their learning.

My hope is that my students will be able to grow, lead and transform in their academics through STEM, Problem Based Learning and reading.

This project includes materials for each of the Units we work on in Fifth Grade Science. Students will be given the opportunity to come up with solutions for real life problems. I would act as a facilitator, giving them to opportunity to take charge of their learning. The Learning Outcomes would include students being able to think, create, analyze and and apply the knowledge we have learned in class.

The novels would help to increase the students' Lexile Levels and allow for them to catch up on some classic novels. We often read Informational Text in Science class, but these novels offer the chance to engage in developing their own line of thought, work on socially appropriate skills, and increase their vocabulary. The other materials listed are to explore the Physical and Chemical changes unit, creating slime, and the Heredity unit, with a Family Tree Project and DNA model, to further our commitment to engage families.

The mission to improve the quality of education for our students starts with providing and maintaining a high-performing school district.
