Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students can leave their houses and arrive at the world's most important technology companies in less than an hour -- but sometimes this tech Mecca feel worlds away. How can students who want desperately to learn to code, especially in the Bay Area, do so without the proper tools?

My students know that they live in one of the most innovative, tech-savvy, and prosperous regions of the world.

By exposure through local hackathons and national programs like Girls Who Code, many of them know that they want to contribute their voice and talents to solving the most intriguing problems that technology is addressing today. Accordingly, my students advocated to bring computer science education to our high school. Next year, Castlemont will be offering AP Computer Science to 25 enthusiastic students. This will be one of few classes of its kind offered to students in our district. Additionally, we will have a Girls Who Code club on campus to get more students, not strictly those taking the AP-level course, involved with CS. By the end of next year, it is my goal that every student on campus has some exposure to computer science. I am so fortunate for many student leaders are dedicating their time and talents to further this same goal.

My Project

The laptops that I am requesting would allow every student in AP Computer Science to have a computer to use at school and to take home. These laptops are critical for our developing CS program. To start, my students cannot rely on an operable computer lab at school. Secondly, I need my students to put in considerable practice at home; they can only do this if they have their own machine. Lastly, I deeply believe that all students, especially those who identify as being interested in technology, should have consistent access to the Internet. Not only will these laptops help them in AP Computer Science, but they will be able to use them to access resources in other classes. The protective sleeves will help ensure that these laptops stay nice for the next group of students who get to use them. Lastly, students need to be able to turn in their code files regardless of whether their family can afford internet access at home; therefore the flash drives are invaluable tools.

With these laptops and an AP Computer Science class, my students will learn to code and bring themselves on step closer to joining the world of tech.

Thank you in advance for giving them a life-changing gift.
