My Students

My first graders are eager learners. They are a community of many cultures and are inclusive of special education students and English Language Learners. My students attend an urban, public K-8 school.

For some, the classroom at school is the most stable environment they know.

Therefore, I aim to make my classroom a safe and comfortable place where students can be themselves, despite other possible turmoil in their lives. My students really deserve comfortable, alternative seating choices in the classroom.

My Project

I am seeking paints, canvas, and scratch boards to better integrate art into the curriculum. I believe students will better understand social studies and science concepts when they can draw, paint and create.

Many students, particularly English Language Learners and Special Education students, feel more successful when they can demonstrate understanding through the visual arts.

They can use drawings and paintings to help explain what they have learned. Art also helps to develop their speaking vocabularies.

With sufficient art supplies, students will be able to experiment with various mediums and show their creativity. I am anxious to hear my students say, "Look at THIS!" and explain to the class what they have created.
