Ask a Worm

Help me give my students a worm composter kit for their Mystery Science unit.

My Students

I teach fifth grade at a K-8 elementary school in the Sierra Nevada foothills. My students are growing up together in a small, tight-knit community school. I have diverse learning needs throughout my classroom but all of my students are eager, enthusiastic and innovative despite our low socioeconomic and Title I status. They are enjoying collaborative, hands-on projects and working together to accomplish a goal.

This is my first year teaching fifth grade.

I'm excited to have students participate in their growth and education throughout the year.

My Project

Our school has a subscription to Mystery Science. Mystery Science provides ready-made science mysteries for my fifth graders. Because of this, it has been easy to build science into the general education, self-contained classroom. Each lesson contains a central mystery, discussion questions, supplemental reading, and a hands-on activity.

My students need a worm composter, worm bedding and red wrigglers to complete their life science lesson "Do worms really eat dirt?" Students will observe worms and think about how the worms’ behavior indicates their role in the garden.

Then, they conduct a simple experiment with multiple trials, discuss what makes a “fair test,” list variables that can affect their test, identify a testable question, and design an experiment to answer their question.
