Asian Literature Independent Literary Circles

Help me give my students a wide variety of stories from Asia (India's The God of Small Things, China's The Three Body Problem, Japan's Snow Country, and Korea's Joy Luck Club) in order to create independent literary circles.

My Project

My students are from a Title 1 urban school, and they have an extensive representation of African American literature within their curriculum. However, there is much interest and little availability for students to pursue Asian and Asian-American Literature. This is especially necessary for the growing awareness of discrimination against AAPI people and my school's attempt to provide more cultural awareness in this area.

This project would fill in this Asian literature representation gap and allow students to pursue independent literary circles where they read on their own and journal their thoughts before sharing with others what they have learned.

They are very eager to learn, especially with the popularity of anime, and they could use some authentic voices to help fill in any gaps.

My goal for this project is to give these students an opportunity to expand their understanding of the world while also relying on different tools of reflection to ensure that they approach the readings in a critical manner. I believe that it would overall improve the voices represented and help promote social justice.
