Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach an incredible group of sixth grade students, each with their own strengths and interests. We are working to build our class library with culturally relevant book sets. These sets will be used for guided reading groups, book clubs and extension activities. Students need to be able to connect with the characters, settings and problems in the text. For far too long, all student populations haven't been reflected in literature. It's time for that to change.
I believe that students should see themselves reflected in literature.
This project is full of culturally relevant book sets. I am ordering 4-5 books for each set because most of my book clubs/groups are between 4-5 students.
Diverse book clubs have helped us create an empathetic community in the classroom. Our students are so excited when they finish a book with characters or situations they can identify with. Book clubs offer our students the opportunity to hear their peers' perspectives on literature and have genuine, academic conversations that are meaningful to their academics and social-emotional health.
The book clubs are led by the students to help them develop literary analysis skills and literary discussion skills. Multiple copies of these diverse books will allow everyone in one book club to read the same book at the same time without worrying about having enough copies. Thank you for helping my students build a lifelong love of reading!
