As the Dust Settles

Help me give my students access to high-level picture books (Separate is Never Equal and Dear Mr. Rosenwald) to build context for diversifying our perspectives in reading historical fiction novels Bud, Not Buddy, and Esperanza Rising.

My Project

We will utilize the high-level picture books (The Great American Dust Bowl and Dorothea Lange) along with a "choose your own adventure" book to create a solid foundation for building an understanding of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl.

We will further expand our lens of perspective about this period of American History to include the plight and struggles of minorities to survive and find belonging amidst an unsettled landscape of uncertainty known as the Great Depression.

The novels Bud, Not Buddy, and Esperanza Rising will allow us to "travel" with a young African American boy and Mexican girl on their personal journeys of self-discovery and acceptance during a period of time where empathy and understanding were just as valuable as any commodity. Our hope is to foster a sense of acceptance for others as we attach ourselves to each character's shadow and experience the world through their eyes. Students will have the context from the picture books to deepen their understanding of the setting and gain valuable insight into the actions, beliefs, and motivations of characters in the respective novels.

We will then transition back to picture books (Separate is Never Equal and Dear Mr. Rosenwald) for students to read and "see" the struggle for equality in education during this time period. As a narrative writing project, we will connect the two journeys of Bud and Esperanza from their respective novels by writing our own "chapter" that allows the characters to cross paths. Students will be tasked with creating a "connection point" for the two characters to meet and intertwine their stories. One of the major themes of the characters connecting, will be a discussion about the struggle for acceptance.

Coach Maz will only receive their materials if this project is fully funded by August 18.
