My Students

Each day I look out into a sea of beautiful, shining faces eager to learn. Each child is unique in their abilities, their experiences, their cultures, and their talents they bring to my world and to the world around us.

Everyday, my students challenge me to think and encourage me to reflect upon the way I teach and what I teach.

Recently, in June, as I was reading a story about a young girl with long, brown hair, a little girl said, "She has princess hair like you do." I was taken aback by her comment, but then suddenly realized that this young African American girl could not see herself in the story or relate to the character within the book. Did she think that was the only way beauty could be seen? How many other students within my room could not see themselves within the stories I shared with them? On that day, I was taught by my student and I knew changes had to be made.

My Project

A majority of our day is dedicated to reading: both reading to the students and then teaching them to read. Children's literature is a wonderful way for students to learn life lessons, learn values, learn about their communities, and learn more about the world around them. More importantly, it is a wonderful, and crucial, way for them to learn more about themselves, to love themselves, and to appreciate each other's differences. Unfortunately, only 14% of the children’s books written have multicultural content, (Lee and Low) and because of this, the opportunities for some students to connect with characters--personally, culturally, etc.--may be limited.

By receiving these multicultural books, folders and poster, students will be able to see themselves, their cultures, and their personal experiences through storybook characters that look like them and act like them.

Not only will this help to further kindle their love for reading, but it can help them share their unique experiences and stories with their friends. At the same time, this can strengthen students' empathy, as well as their imaginations.

I want all of my students to know they are loved, valued and seen in my room. My hope is they will learn and live the quote, by Maya Angelou...

"In diversity there is beauty and there is strength."
