As a Matter of Fact, Math Facts Matter

Help me give my students and other students at Westland Elementary an exciting and innovative way to practice, learn, memorize, and master basic number facts.

My Students

My low-income school is diverse and consists of many English Language Learners. It is also a magnet school for gifted students. Each grade level has one class of students who have tested into our Accelerated Learning Program (ALPS) and 2 general education classes. Although I am the 2nd-grade ALPS teacher, I work with all students. I even collaborate with our resource team.

Many students struggle with memorizing math facts.

I know that all students of all abilities are eager and able to learn! As our 2nd-grade team leader and our school's lead mentor, I continue to do all I can to help each child learn.

My Project

Reflex Math provides students the opportunity to learn, master, and retain basic number facts. It is formatted in a way that makes learning fun. Students are able to work at their own pace because Reflex is adaptive and individualized. Each day students receive data to track their progress. Watching their 'fact pyramid' grow and getting to play a variety of games keeps students looking forward to time on Reflex. More time practicing facts equates to more facts learned.

When students have a strong foundation of math facts, they will have more success as math concepts become more complex.

They are able to focus on solving problems rather than worrying about the basic number facts needed to solve them. Knowing facts builds confidence! Confidence promotes growth.

Reflex helps develop math skills for each individual by presenting an initial test to determine what each child needs. Data is given to the teacher to help drive instruction. The teacher can print certificates for students as they reach milestones. Reflex works! I have used it in my own class for the past two years and would like to see other teachers use it as well. I am confident the data we receive will support the growth our school hopes to obtain. I know this program has the potential to help our entire school. I look forward to school-wide PLC's to analyze data and celebrated growth!
