Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is full of young artists eager to advance their skills, use critical thinking, and work hard to succeed! My young artists are creative and energetic.
My students are excited to create art, but many come from low income families that cannot afford to purchase extra supplies for courses like art.
Many families in our area are still strained by the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and we need help for art supplies.
The students I teach find the art making process pleasurable and it can help reduce stress. Art helps my students relax to achieve success in their other classes and helps grow them into creative human beings!
My Project
When creating art, it's important to use the appropriate paper so that the art will "work." My students need Canson cold press watercolor paper because it takes water and paint well. We also need mixed media paper for other kinds of artwork. I would also like my students to have the experience of contrast drawing on black paper. A lot of the paper we currently have is faded out and damaged from high humidity that resulted from Hurricane Harvey and living so close to the Texas Coast.

Using the correct type of paper for art media helps student see how the materials "work" and helps them better understand the art making process. A better understanding of their materials keeps students working and makes them more likely to continue the art making process outside of school and beyond!
