This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a Kindergarten teacher of 15 students within the age ranges of 4, 5 and 6. They are special little people who often advocate the love for coming to school. They are little people who often carry alongside them big adult problems. 100% of them are participants in the free breakfast and lunch program and often have to be responsible for themselves and siblings.
We live in a small Georgia town without much opportunity, but try to provide large yet special moments through fun times and optimal learning environments that are safe and complete.
Teachers' jobs are to stretch each child's abilities even when the student believes their talents are minimal. There are no minimalist ideas in kindergarten. Everyone is taught that they are super! AND...my kids are always super and I want to allow them the chances to know and understand their potentials!
My Project
Ohhh, we need a table so that we may become Artsy little kindergarten beings!! Paper to cut, foam sheets to turn into amazing art, pom poms for noses and wiggly eyes too! Can't forget the sparkly glitter, buttons, sponge letters with numbers and dabbers to dab and paint sticks to paint with. It just might get a little messy in our little Georgia town, but oh the fun and excitement with squeals of laughter that will be heard in our classroom!!
In October, our students were sent home early expecting to see a little wind, some rain and maybe a few downed branches, but were instead met with complete trees toppled and some houses completely gone.
We were in a federally declared disaster area!! Students were displaced from their homes having to stay with other family members, in motels and at gyms and are still without personal homes. Classrooms were also displaced having to pack up what was needed to teach and moved to drier and safer rooms while repair was happening. Emotions ran high amongst students and even teachers. Counselors had to be brought in and conversations were held explaining what a hurricane is and what it actually does. Neighborhoods are still in repair mode, but our city and schools are once again together and safe! Teachers, students, principals, parents and even pets are moving right along. We were not destroyed!!
These art materials and table will provide us the chance to return back to the normalcy of school fun! Students will paint their best friends using paint, foam, paper and glitter. Some Hurricane Michael art work may even appear as a source of emotional repair. Oh the joy to know that my students can become Artsy Smarties using these art materials and have a place at a table!
