Art+Science = An Amazing Second Grade Project About Cars
My students need cardstock, a case of plastic lids, and 8 books about cars along with a book about the art of James Rizzi so they can combine art and science to learn about cars and create an amazing art project.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love science, math, and art and I try to make their lessons exciting by bringing these lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the STEAM curriculum. I hope this project will help inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEAM fields.
My students are wonderful second graders.
Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream deaf and hard of hearing students, autistic students and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner for enrichment activities with a 3rd grade class and a class of students with learning disabilities who will also participate in this project.
My Project
My students will be visiting the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles in December. This project will be a follow-up to that field trip. The goal of this project will be for my students to learn more information about cars including the engineering, science, and design work involved in car production. I am asking for a pack of cardstock, a case of plastic lids, and eight books about cars along with a book about the art of James Rizzi.
I will begin this project by reading the 5 nonfiction books about cars.
Then I will read the 2 fiction books about cars including "If I Built a Car" in which a boy uses his him imagination to create very creative and unusual cars. Then I will share the vehicle drawing book with my students and allow them to practice drawing their own cars.
The next step will be to share the James Rizzi - The New York Paintings book with my students. I will focus on the all the cars that James Rizzi puts in his paintings. I will encourage my class to use their imagination to create their own amazing cars. They will draw their cars onto cardstock/tagboard and then use markers to decorate their cars. They will also color and use the plastic lids as the tires for their cars. The last step will be for my students to create a bulletin board scene in which they will decide where to put each of their cars.
This project will allow my students to learn about cars and create an amazing art project. It will enable my students to go beyond just reading about cars in their books. These supplies will enrich my curriculum and allow my students to use their creativity and become excited about what they are learning! I want this project to help inspire my students' imaginations and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEAM fields.
