Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine looking out into the audience seeing your parents crying because they are so proud as they watch you perform on stage. This was the scene when the students performed their Arts in Action program this year. We are trying to get the program back again so other students can participate!

My students attend a Title 1 elementary school in North Carolina.

Over 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and about 50% of the student population speaks 2 languages. Most students come from low-income households where parents are struggling to make ends meet. Despite these circumstances, the students are bright, energetic kids who come to school each day ready to learn and put forth 100% effort. Their hard work has paid off well as many of them have made excellent progress this year.

My Project

Our school participated in the North Carolina Arts in Action program earlier this year. "North Carolina Arts in Action uses dance, an art form embodied by every society, as an enjoyable way for young children to develop discipline, self-esteem and a desire to excel. When children are able to express feelings and ideas through artistic movement, they gain self-awareness and often self-acceptance discovering new talents. The program becomes an incentive for students to achieve in the classroom, learn to work as a team, and develop respect for one another." The program focused on the environment and ways we can help Mother Earth to keep it safe from harm. The students worked cooperatively and expressed through song, dance, and artwork how we can preserve the Earth. The students took their understanding of the environment to a deeper level as shown through their performance. They didn't stand before us reciting facts but created a learning opportunity for all to see. We want to learn more.

We want more students to participate and benefit from this educational program.

All the students in the school saw the show and expressed excitement in performing if we can get the program again. It is a wonderful program that not only teaches science concepts but allows students to use different artistic forms to express that knowledge. The entire school is looking forward to participating and/or watching another Arts in Action performance. Please help make this possible! Thank you!
