This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Albert Einstein once said, "It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." I too have this desire, to allow my students to creatively express themselves while simultaneously increasing their knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live.

My students are second graders at a Title I, 100% free lunch school.

About 65% of my students are English Language Learners. Though their school is in an inner city area, they enjoy the outdoors and exploring their world. My students enjoy the arts and get excited every time they see an art lesson or project on our daily schedule.

My Project

We need arts materials such as oil pastels, watercolor paints, and aluminum tooling to engage in meaningful arts lessons. My students will use these arts materials to engage in meaningful arts lessons that impact their understanding of science and math lessons, as well as of multicultural social science topics. Through lessons in lines using oil pastels and watercolors, students will engage in critical thinking and planning, which will help in language arts as they develop their writing, and in math as they develop their problem solving skills. The aluminum tooling will be used to explore Mexican tin art while simultaneously learning about Mexican culture. My students will use construction paper for an array of art lessons, but most importantly to create art portfolios to keep a record of their work.

Arts impact the core curricular subjects: math, science and language arts.

The arts also impact social skills by encouraging the sharing of ideas and team work, and helping to build a positive classroom culture. With the successful funding of this project my students will have an increased academic understanding of core curriculum, and also make a positive impact on the world in which they live.
