My students need drawing, dramatic play, movement, and building materials to tap into their area of artistic giftedness. They also need a camcorder with a tripod and accessories.
How do you know if you like something if you never get a chance to try it?
I teach a class of 21 kindergarten and first grade students in a suburban Title 1 school.
I have English Language Learners, academically gifted, on grade level and below grade level students. They all work hard, come to school with smiles on their sweet faces each day, and make the best of all that my school and classroom have to offer them. They deserve the opportunity to experience a wide variety of "the arts" to see what they might excel in.
My Project
I want my students to try different forms of art. I want them to create with paper and colors of different mediums, dance, make music, design and build, and try dramatic arts.
I have requested materials that will be used in year-long learning opportunities that integrate the arts into our curriculum. I want to have the children act out the fairy tale and folk tale plays that I already have in my classroom. I have requested costumes and sound effect makers for this. I also want to be able to video these performances so we can share them with our families.
The markers, colored pencils, crayons, and roll-on glitter will allow the children to experience a variety of media as they create with colors.
The CDs, bells, and wrist ribbons will encourage the children to experience different music and movements to express themselves.
The building materials will tap into the spatial and mathematical giftedness of my students, allowing them to design and build a variety of structures.
This project is very important to me because I believe that every child is gifted in some area.
It is my charge to find out what that area is and capitalize on it in every way possible. With these materials, I can help my students learn about their own giftedness and develop that as much as possible.
