My Students
My students and their families have been hit hard by the school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many of my students do not have access to printers, computers, or even internet service in their homes. This poses an extreme challenge when it comes to continuing to provide effective language and speech support as a district speech therapist.
My students who have attentional limitations secondary to disabilities such as Autism are particularly impacted by the school closures.
Their disabilities impact their ability to meaningfully interact with a live speech therapist on a computer screen.
In a short period of time, families and teachers alike have had to adapt to new technologies and new expectations. This is all while juggling daily life challenges to pay the bills and put food on the table. It has been difficult to provide consistent support to families who already have so much on their plate. It is my job to find a way to provide speech and language support in a way that best meets my students' unique needs.
My Project
So much of learning, playing, and communicating comes from arts and crafts projects. My students do not have access to arts and crafts materials in their homes. I want to help my special needs students continue learning in creative ways even while participating in distance learning from their homes.
Arts & crafts are a fun and easy way to support speech and language development.
By providing my students' families with supplies such as construction paper, foam paper, and scissors, I can instruct families on how to create fun projects in the home all while adding to their child's language skills. I will support families by helping their children learn new vocabulary words, follow simple directions, and create unique crafts using these materials.
