90% of my upcoming class this year is well below proficient in their reading levels. Miraculously, I will have less than 20 students. This means I will be able to focus so deeply on them, and really help them learn skills they need! I want to do everything in my power to help these students acquire they skills they are missing from previous grades as well as learn 2nd grade skills.
Incorporating the arts into instruction has been proven to have myriad benefits: music specifically engages the senses, so the brain makes more neural connections; it is also highly engaging, helping students with low motivation who may have not felt successful in the past.
Many of these students will have had very little exposure to musical instruments, so having these tools in the classroom will be life-changing for multiple reasons. I expect to see improved excitement for phonics and reading practice, and therefore increased reading levels.
We will use scarves for spelling words in the air (2.R.3). Rhythm sticks will be fun tools for practicing dividing up multisyllabic words. Other musical instruments will be fun supplementary tools for class readalouds, to deepen comprehension (2.R.5) or to highlight specific phonics patterns (2.R.3). These tools will be reused throughout my years of teaching and shared with other teachers who want to use them.
