I teach art to 200 7th graders in the middle of a low income housing area in NY City. Art is mandatory so I try to impart my love of art, artists and the history of art to my students. Each month I dress as as the "Artist of the Month" and enter the room in character. Students can ask questions about my "life", my work, my inspirations.... September was Grandma Moses Month. Students forgot that it was their teacher as they offered assistance to the old woman with a shawl and cane while she talked about her painting. Every week students complete exciting worksheets that I create. It improves their literacy as well as develops their knowledge about art. To this end, I need a photocopy machine. We have two in the school for 120 teachers and they are always breaking down. I reproduce a lot of art and writing every day and the students build a portfolio of information. The classes are exciting and unforgettable! Art is a chance for all to be successful and 7th graders are at an age of struggling to express themselves. In my classes they learn about the passion of artists. The simple technology of a photocopier would enhance my program tremendously.
