This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are considered low-income and high risk for failure. They come from families who are underprivileged, and most live in poverty. The school provides their supplies and sometimes even their clothes and shoes. Almost all of my students are second-language learners who are not fluent in either language. Most come to school hungry and tired due to poor living conditions. Ninety-five percent of my students are Hispanic and English language learners, and all get free lunch every day. We are considered a Title I school, due to the factors above.

My Project

This year I would like to integrate art into my instruction. I see this happening in language arts and social studies classes. By using a creative way to show understanding of the subject material, students will be more engaged in what they are learning, and art will bring them joy as well. Students will get to tap in to their creativity and express themselves in a way that does not show up on standardized tests. So many of my students struggle to become proficient based on end of year assessments, but given the opportunity to show what they've learned in a more creative and artistic way, this will improve their learning and make them more motivated to do well in school. With your help we will make kids love to come to school!
