This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class are ready to learn! For many of these young learners, this is their first time in school. And now it's at a distance. All of the students in my class receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Most of the students are English Language Learners. The school is in an area where gangs and violence aren't rare; yet my students have all the potential in the world to be successful in school.
These amazing students will head off to a very academic kindergarten next year.
Although we do spend the required amount of time doing Language Arts, Math and English Language Development, I would still like to provide them the opportunity to experience many of the creative projects we would be doing if we were in the classroom.
My Project
Learning at home, virtually, is difficult for all students but especially impacts young students. During live teaching sessions, I notice that they are most engaged when they are following me doing a drawing or coloring lesson. If we were in the classroom we would have an art center and a writing center where students have access to these supplies. I would like to use these supplies for directed drawings, guided water color painting and also "Choice Board" art activities.
Most of my students have been severely financially impacted by the Corona Virus and I don't feel comfortable asking their parents to go out and buy supplies when they are struggling to feed their families, yet, I know it will bring joyful participation and engagement for my young learners.
