My class is part of our integrated pre-school program. They are one of the classes of 4 years olds getting ready for kindergarten, but preferred to be called the AM Penguins or PM Penguins based on our mascot Sir Nils (the penguin).
Everyone comes in ready to see what the day has in store for us, everyday!
I love seeing how every child in class grows and becomes more than they were before. We become a community of learners and yes, I learn as much as they do!
Play really is children's work. The more children are involved in their play, the more their minds grow. Hands on experiences are vital in helping children learn about the world around them. I use pretend play as a way to help children build on their experiences and express themselves.
Children are asked to write about their thoughts and ideas, however, they need to have a variety of experiences before they can write about them.
Building with blocks, Legos and our dramatic play center are key opportunities. I have also used manipulative pieces like Playmobils, which allow children to act out different activities (e.g. going to a restaurant, building a home, working at a zoo/aquarium, and even going to school) to give the children time and opportunity to try out what they see in the world around them. They can then use those experiences to create the ideas they will write about.
