Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th Grade students need to develop their artistic abilities and exposure to the tools used by professional artists. My school is exploring ways to add the "A" -the Arts- into our vision of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, in a primarily working class, inner-city neighborhood, my students do not have easy access to quality art supplies.
Also, coming from families where parents may be working multiple jobs and struggling to meet everyday needs, my students may find that quality art supplies are luxuries that their family cannot afford.
My students need to be able to visualize themselves as artists, using quality tools and materials.
My Project
I have seen my students change their demeanor when they knew they were working with "real" art supplies!
Providing my students with high quality sketchbooks for their paint, colored pencil, and charcoal drawings will inspire them to see themselves as Artists!
These simple personal sketchbooks are powerful tools to develop an Artistic mindset - to reinforce my students' vision of themselves as artists and to encourage them to elevate their level of concentration and effort when creating their art pieces.
Instead of stuffing their drawings into their desks, folders, and backpacks, they will have sketchbooks to protect their valuable artwork.
