This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my 4th grade classroom we routinely have lots of hands-on learning tasks. For science we explore real word encounters, and in math we are learning to perfect our math skills in physical ways as opposed to the standard paper-and-pencil format. I really want to bring spelling alive for them too!
I have 32 students, an equal division of boys and girls, and they love to have fun and be creative.
These are kids who love to explore their world through artistic adventures. Drawing, coloring, and bringing lessons into a 3-dimension life are always huge hits in my classroom.
My Project
Spelling words are often one of the tasks that students find boring and often will avoid doing. I want to bring words alive for them through a fun and creative way. One of my ideas is to have students spell their words using glue and yarn. The idea is to have them write their words and then glue colorful pieces of yarn over them creating colorful word walls that can be shared with the class, school, parents, and community.
Students who are learning through fun and creative tasks are known to retain the information better, and spelling is a huge hurdle that 4th graders often struggle to overcome.
By giving them an option of creativity they are more likely to complete tasks and learn without realizing that they are learning.
