Artistic Expression Through Hip Hop Dance

My students need exposure to hip-hop and street dance as they investigate the current landscape of dance in culture. Partnering with Dovetail Studios will bring local professional hip-hop artists for performance and dance instruction to our school.

My Students

My students are creators, problem solvers, thinkers, and movers. Students at R. are expressive, bright and inquisitive! Dancers in the R. Dance Program range from grade levels PreK through 8th grade, and include students of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds.

In dance class, these diverse students come together with a shared goal: to learn, investigate, and express themselves through the common language of movement.

The R. Dance Program allows over 500 students to experience dance each week while at school.

My Project

A partnership with Dovetail Studios will include a visit and performance by a Chicago-based hip-hop dance crew for the entire school, visits by hip-hop artists during middle school dance class, and guest choreography for student performance from professional artists active in the underground Chicago street dance scene.

Performances and instruction will focus on the history and technique of hip-hop dance, relate to the current dance landscape with which students are familiar, and connect directly to our unit of study on hip-hop and street dance.

These visits will expose students to alternative dance while broadening their understanding of dance in a historical context, deepen their analysis of dance as an expression of and influence on culture, and expand possibilities of their own personal artistic expression.
