I am a kindergarten teacher in a low-income, inner city school in San Francisco who will follow my 20 students to first grade this fall. As a seasoned kindergarten teacher, I have seen the value of arts integration into other subject areas. With the move to first grade, I want to continue to make art a priority and expand upon what children have already learned.
I plan to focus on an artist/ type of art each month that is representative of the cultures of my students. We will read about, observe, create and put up an "art gallery" where we will showcase our work. We will also visit the Asian Art Museum and the Museum of Craft and Folk Art.
In order to do this, I will need books about our artists and a variety of art supplies.
My students have few opportunities to experience the fine arts in their day to day lives. This proposal will ensure that art comes to them in a tangible, memorable and "hands-on" way.
