Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a colony of artists. Ours is a public charter school that requires an application and multiple forms of audition. Not only are there academic requirements, but also some form of performance specific to one of our fourteen artistic conservatories. These students are amazingly talented and also bright, diverse, tolerant, and empathetic. They have often been pushed to the margins of a traditional public school, but here they are accepted and celebrated by other artistic thinkers with high expectations for themselves and their community. They truly want to be here at this school and in my elective course; this makes a huge difference and leads to enormous amounts of effort and drive.

My Project

My students need tool sets, rolling pins and other basic ceramics tool kits to manipulate the clay they will be using to model human body systems. I am always searching for ways to make the complicated details of human anatomy more accessible for my students. In addition to visuals and discussion, hands-on activities are vital for understanding. This year, I hope to make use of Anatomy in Clay Maniken modeling systems in my classes. This grant begins the attempt to collect the materials to incorporate this engaging, multicsensory system into the curriculum of our anatomy class. Modeling is an essential part of the Next Generation Science Standards and the Anatomy in Clay system is based on this benchmark. Students will determine shape and structural elements of most of the organ systems of the human body and build them to scale in a hollowed skeletal model. With each system we study, the model will become more complete until all organs have been studied and added. Students will have a three dimensional representation of the macroscopic elements of anatomy and a deeper comprehension of the microscopic pieces that make the structure workable.

The Anatomy in Clay system will enable my scholar artists to gain a profound understanding of how the human body systems are interconnected in form and function.

The theme of “form fits function” is a mantra in my class and to truly understand the functioning of the various aspects of the human body, students must also know why parts are formed and placed as they are. The sculpting tools that will be purchased with this grant will allow for the hands-on creation of the scaled down structures. In future grants, I will seek the Maniken forms that are the basis of the curriculum.
