My students need various arts and craft supplies such as felt, crayons, watercolor sets, glue, and glitter to create their own representation of their understanding of books read.
I teach in a school district with students from various backgrounds, including low income, special needs and English language learners, many of which receive free lunches and are faced with various challenges in school and in the communities they live in. Despite these challenges my students come to school every day, on time, and ready to learn.
My students bring a lot of energy and excitement to school, along with the strong desire to learn to read and write better.
They love to learn through various modalities such as music, movement, and art. When we use music videos to learn our sight words, or skills needed to blend words, I see their eyes light up. They are fully engaged and motivated in learning. I need to utilize various tools and methods that will continue to put that sparkle in their eyes to help my students to be successful and become lifelong learners.
My Project
These supplies will integrate the arts with literacy. Painting, drawing, creating with felt, tissue paper and collage material will become an important key to teaching children, engaging their attention and facilitating their wonder, curiosity, and interests in the books they read and hear read to them. My hope is that my students will come to love reading as I did as a child. Integrating the arts will motivate and encouraging them to do just that. Your donation will help my students. I can just see us now, "sitting on the rug listening to a book being read aloud, or being engaged in a guided reading lesson, and instead of students picking up a pencil and paper, they get to choose from a variety of arts and crafts material."
Students can then create their own interpretation of what was read, make a text to self connection, or show their visualization of the text read by painting, or creating a collage.
For example students can create their own versions of the illustrations using the water color paints, adding glitter or tissue paper with the glue to bring it to life. Students may choose to sketch pictures using the colored pencils or the crayons to demonstrate their connection to the text. During a character study the students can bring the characters to life in a story board on the construction paper using felt and pom pom beads, or a combination of materials. While there are so many art activities to choose from, having materials available with a finished product that students can use to guide their work adds to engaging and motivating students to love books. Students will look forward to proudly share their creative works with their classmates, and families.
