Art You Excited to Give Supplies to Northeast Philadelphia Students?
Help me give my students the supplies they need to creatively engage in their Social Science, US History, World History, and African-American History classes!
I am the head of the history department at a behavioral school in Northeast Philadelphia. I prioritize ensuring that concepts of public policy, government and macroeconomics become relevant and actualized to my students.
The overwhelming majority of my students face homelessness, gun violence, pervasive drug use, incarceration, and/or teen parenting.
For many of them, school is, understandably, not a first priority in their lives. This is not a luxury my students have.
My goal as an educator is not simply to help my kids understand the political world around them, but to teach them the importance of, in a very broad sense, learning. My classroom, first and foremost, is meant to be a space where my kids feel comfortable with being "wrong" when they share aloud, and where they are genuinely excited about knowledge. Many of my students' educational experiences have been interrupted by a myriad of variables, and, even when attending schools, they are in overcrowded classrooms with overworked and burnt out teachers. With these supplies, my students will further understand that they are worthy of a well-equipped classroom that allows them to creatively express themselves.
With these supplies, my students will be able to engage in various projects throughout the year, including but not limited to:
- Protest posters
- Federal Budget Proposals
- Campaign Posters
Additionally, access to headphones allows for my (very often) easily overstimulated students to lock in and focus on their work, regardless of the overcrowded classroom around them.
