Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to express themselves by making beautiful artwork.
I teach Art in an urban high school for special needs students ranging in age from 14 through 21.
My students don't have access to famous artworks. Most have never gone to an art museum and they are not offered an art history course as part of their curriculum. They only see what I am able to show them pictures of, either from books that I own and pass around the room, or online at museum websites. These seldom do the artwork justice. Often, their idea of excellent artwork is the graffiti on the side of the building!
I would love to have large, easy to see reproductions of famous artworks for my students to look at and learn from. These large reproductions would allow them to better see the scale of a piece; the detail and color that are often lost in a small textbook photo. Since most of my students can't read or write, I find that these large reproductions, as well as stimulating videos, DVD's, games, and other visual learning tools are the best way to reach them and allow them to achieve understanding.
Imagine not knowing what the Mona Lisa looks like...or Monet's Waterlilies; Images that we take for granted, but that some students will never see. Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to examine, study and enjoy classic examples of art from all over the world that have shaped our culture. They will bring new focus to their own artwork and develop the skills they need to express themselves through art appropriately. My students are always so grateful for any little thing that they are given: They would be so appreciative of this gift, and it would contribute a great deal to their arts education.
