Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Pre-Kindergarten students come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are experiencing a classroom setting for the very first time and have never interacted with children their own age. Their social-emotional development is crucial at such an influential stage. Many students are discovering how to express themselves. Most of my students are learning English for the first time and have recently moved here from other countries. Many receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status and are being raised in single parent households. Despite these challenges, my students love coming to school to learn. As a teacher in a program for low-income families, I provide high-risk students with a safe, loving, and caring environment where they can begin to feel secure and begin to open up for various learning opportunities in our free-loving preschool.

My Project

Every day, these students walk into the classroom eager to learn. We endure budget cuts every year, leaving the students to go without many resources that aid their success. My students are asked daily to illustrate. Art improves a student's memory and concentration skills, develop decision-making and critical thinking skills. It also enhances communication and listening skills. Art can also help a student to improve self-esteem and social skills.

When a student is working on a project or illustration, it gives them a chance to add the details to paper that they may not be able to verbally communicate.

For this reason, it's highly important for them to have the necessary tools to use. Many of the parents do not have the resources to buy the materials, so I try to make sure it's available in my classroom. A large population of my students, English is their second language or they are learning English all together.
