This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"..armed with a paint-box, one cannot be bored, one cannot be left at a loose end, one cannot 'have several days on one's hands'. Good gracious! what there is to admire and how little time there is to see it in!" -Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965)
I teach visual art to grades Pre-K-5th grade in a low-income, high poverty rural Mississippi Delta community.
My students here love art. They are always so excited to come to class and asking during the day, "What are we going to do when we get to art?" This year my students have voiced that they want pottery and painting. Due to many budget cuts, the supply budget has been cut. I'm very thankful to be able to teach such great students and I want to find resources to get them the supplies for their creative minds.
My Project
The items I'm requesting are items to create many painting projects so my students can explore the world of color. Basket weaving materials to build a sense of pattern - weaving the reed through - back and forth - creating a rhythm. Other items include glue sticks for collages.
My wall in my classroom is painted with the saying "WELCOME TO CREATIVITY". When my students enter my class they know that their minds are free to create and explore the world of art. This is my 5th year teaching and it's wonderful to have students enter without saying, "I CAN'T". Now they are like, "I want to try this and that!".
Help give my students an experience that will make an impression upon their lives.
"It is art that MAKES life, makes interest, makes importance ... and I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process"
-Henry James
